Functional Fitness Training: Is it for you?

At Adaptive Strength, our mission is to educate the world on the importance of true functional fitness. Functional fitness is a buzzword thrown around a lot lately and unfortunately with the creation of companies like F44 and BFT it truly has lost its original purpose and meaning. For us being functionally fit gives you the freedom to do what you want to do.

Functional fitness is focused on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions, not just lifting a certain amount of weight on a gym machine… For example, you could be deadlifting 200+ kgs in the gym, but when you go to put a suitcase in the back of your car, you throw your back out. Or, you can bicep curl with 25kg dumbbells with perfect form, but picking up your child makes you pull a muscle.

If either of these things sounds like you, it may be time to incorporate functional fitness training into your routine. It’s about being strong for life- looking good and moving well are just happy side effects.

Like any new exercise, it’s important to start at a beginner’s pace and ease into it. Many people get started so quickly that they ignore mastering the basics and foundation movement patterns. These basics include achieving a good grounding in strength, balance/coordination, power, range of motion, and mobility. Zeroing in on these types of aspects of training has numerous benefits that translate to your everyday life.

At its core, functional fitness is a type of exercise that supports your everyday life. It includes movements such as walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, lunging, and core. These exercises improve functional strength. Besides making you more well-rounded as a person, functional fitness has a number of benefits. These include benefits for your health, everyday life, and athletic performance.

Here are 5 of the major benefits of functional fitness.

  1. Improves everyday life: By improving the overall function of your body, boosting muscle strength and endurance, and developing muscle and body stability, everyday activities can be completed with ease. Whether you want to go out for a hike, change a car tyre or keep up with the kids this is what functional training is all about.
  2. Increased Mobility: Functional fitness helps to improve flexibility, muscle strength and agility. All of these components will leave you more mobile, which in turn helps with your day- to day life
  3. Improves balance and posture: Since Functional fitness training is all about training the body to make the muscles work together overall strength and balance will improve. Training the muscles to manage weight properly will also reduce stress on the body. In turn, posture will be improved
  4. Build a strong Resilient Body: Functional Fitness training can be great to develop your “in-between” strength and improve your readiness for sport and life’s unpredictable situations. By building “in-between” strength mimicking the movements done in everyday life, the body is more likely to be able to withstand stressors and reduce injury risk. Functional fitness training encourages muscle, ligament, and tendon strength in multiple planes which are the areas that are highly susceptible to injury.
  5. Being healthy, successfully aging well, looking good and moving well are all a happy side effect

I’ve said it multiple times before, but the advantage of functional fitness is that this training translates to your everyday life. Be strong, move well and feel confident in your body!
