REST- It’s important when training or recovering from an injury!
But don’t get stuck on the rollercoaster of rest and re-injury because you’re not considering your tissues capacity!
Some quick definitions:
- Tissue Capacity is the capacity your tissues [muscles, ligaments, tendons etc] are able to perform movements without exacerbating symptoms or causing an tissue injury
- Training load is essentially your training volume (how much), intensity (how hard), frequency (how often) and type of movement.
Either try to maintain it when injured, or don’t rush back to soon too quickly when recovered
We see this occurring way to often
Injuries often occur when your activity levels increase faster than your tissue capacity adapts
When you rest after an injury your activity reduces helping symptoms ease, but your tissue capacity will also reduce
This means when you return back to activity your capacity can be quickly exceeded again, meaning another injury!
And sometimes a never ending rollercoaster of rest and reoccurring injury can go on, and on, and on…
To avoid this try to maintain your tissue capacity when injured with some rehab!
This means when you restart your activity after an injury you are less likely to suffer a reoccurrence!
Resting from certain activities or sports when injured is often sensible, but you still need to consider maintaining your tissue’s capacity whilst recovering
